DVLA Renewal Medical Examination

At Licence Medical, we provide comprehensive medical examinations required for DVLA licence renewals. Whether you’re a professional driver or over 70, our experienced team ensures a smooth and efficient process to keep you on the road.

Who Needs a DVLA Medical?

You may require a DVLA medical examination if you are:

  • Applying for or renewing a Group 2 licence – HGV Medical / PCV Medical (see other pages on our website)
  • Aged 45 or over (renewal every 5 years)
  • Aged 65 or over (annual renewal)
  • Over 70 renewing a car or motorcycle licence
  • Returning to driving after a medical suspension
  • Required by the DVLA due to a medical condition

Our DVLA Medical Examination Process

1. Medical History Review

We’ll begin by reviewing your medical history, including any conditions or medications that may affect your fitness to drive a road vehicle and complete D4 paperwork.

2. Physical Examination

We conduct a physical health check, including blood pressure, cardiovascular health, neurological and musculoskeletal condition – all in line with DVLA D4 form requirements.

3. Vision /
Eye test

We assess your eyesight using a Snellen chart, including peripheral vision and colour perception if required. Please bring any glasses or contact lenses you wear for driving.

4. ECG
(if required)

Some drivers, particularly over age 45 or with medical conditions, may require an ECG. This will be carried out on-site at your appointment by our trained medical team as required by the DVLA.

Duration, Preparation & What to Expect

Your medical will take approximately 30 to 45 minutes, depending on your age. We aim to keep the process efficient while meeting all DVLA medical standards.

The completed D4 medical form is valid for 4 months from the date of the medical and completion by our doctor.

The vision assessment must be conducted using the prescription currently worn for driving and is carried out using a Snellen chart. If the doctor cannot complete the vision assessment, this will need to be done separately by an optician at your own expense.

To help your appointment run smoothly, please bring:

  • A valid photo ID (e.g. driving licence or passport)
  • Any corrective lenses (glasses or contact lenses)
  • A list of any current medications
  • Your DVLA D4 Form as part of your application

If you’re over 45 or applying for a licence that requires DVLA D4 paperwork, additional tests such as an ECG may be required. These can usually be performed on-site during the same appointment.

All examinations are carried out at our CQC-registered medical facility, designed for comfort and convenience. We provide:

  • Free on-site parking
  • Clean, accessible toilet facilities
  • A private, professional examination room
  • Waiting areas for early arrivals

We recommend arriving a few minutes early to complete any remaining paperwork and avoid delays.

Who needs a DVLA medical to renew their licence?

You’ll need a medical if you hold a Group 2 licence (HGV or PCV) and are:

Applying for your first licence

Aged 45 or older (renew every 5 years)

Aged 65 or older (renew every year)
You’ll also need one if you’re over 70 renewing a car or motorcycle licence, or if you have certain medical conditions.

What is a DVLA Group 2 medical?

A Group 2 medical is required for professional drivers of large vehicles like HGVs and buses. It checks your fitness to drive safely and includes a medical history review, vision test, and physical exam. Some drivers may also need an ECG.

What form do I need for my DVLA medical?

The most common form is the D4, used for Group 2 licences. Over-70 drivers may receive a D46P or D1 form depending on their licence type. You can request these directly from the DVLA or download them online.

How long is the D4 form valid after the medical?
Once completed by a registered doctor, the D4 form is valid for 4 months. Be sure to submit your renewal to the DVLA within this period.
