Who Needs a Forklift Medical?
Forklift and construction drivers are often required to complete a medical assessment to confirm they are safe to operate heavy machinery. Many employers and training providers request medicals that meet DVLA Group 2 standards – especially for safety-critical roles.
If you’re unsure whether you need a medical, we’re happy to advise. We regularly work with construction firms, training providers, and individual operators across Hampshire.
You may need a forklift medical if you are:
- Starting a new role as a forklift, crane, plant or telehandler operator
- Renewing your operator certification or workplace fitness to work
- Returning to work after illness or injury affecting driving ability
- Asked to provide a medical by your employer, insurer or occupational health team
- Required to meet HSE or DVLA fitness to drive guidelines
Our Forklift & Construction Driver Medical Examination Process

1. Medical History Review
We’ll begin by reviewing your medical history, including any conditions or medications that may affect your fitness to operate machinery or meet DVLA or employer health standards.

2. Physical Examination
We conduct a physical health check, including blood pressure, cardiovascular health, neurological and musculoskeletal condition – all in line with DVLA Group 2 medical standards.

3. Vision /
Eye test
We assess your eyesight using a Snellen chart, including peripheral vision and colour perception if required. Please bring any glasses or contact lenses you use onsite or for driving.

4. ECG
(if required)
Some workers, particularly over age 45 or with medical conditions, may require an ECG. This will be carried out on-site at your appointment by our trained medical team as necessary.
Duration, Preparation & What to Expect
Your forklift medical will take approximately 20 to 30 minutes, depending on your age and whether an ECG is required. We aim to make the process quick and straightforward while meeting DVLA Group 2 medical standards.
To help your appointment run smoothly, please bring:
- A valid photo ID (e.g. driving licence or passport)
- Any corrective lenses (glasses or contact lenses)
- A list of any current medications
- The appropriate medical form from your employer or training provider (if supplied)
- A summary of your medical history from your GP (if requested by your organisation)
